SOPHIE JANE UNRAVELED: AN INTERVIEW.

Sophie Jane is a photographer located in New Zealand. Her love affair with photography began when her Dad gave her his old Pentax SLR to play with. She went on to study a mix of traditional film and digital photography after high school and spent hours either in the darkroom or on the computer honing her Photoshop skills. Now, she creates magic, on the daily in the beautiful landscape of New Zealand which includes amazing beaches, alpine deserts, mountains, rainforests and geothermal regions all within a days drive at most. We interviewed her to learn more and her MINI LECTURE in our SCHOOL goes live August 4th!! If you are not already enrolled in the school, now is the perfect time!!

What inspires your art? Well, photography is perfect for me because I have always been obsessed with light and the way it shapes how I see the world. The landscape in New Zealand is pretty awe-inspiring. Just getting outdoors is enough to make me grab my camera, but documenting my kids’ childhood in this beautiful place we live is everything.

What do you shoot with? Camera body and favourite lens? Canon 5D Mark 3 and my fave lens is my Canon 50mm f1.2

What other ways do you express your creativity? I have always drawn (I adore life-drawing) and I love to paint. I play guitar and sing too- not as much as I used to though.

How do you de-stress at the end of the day? Red wine! And dance parties in the living room with my boys.

What kind of music do you listen to while editing? It changes depending on my mood but usually either rock, blues or classical. I love Rachmaninov!!

What is your favourite book? I’m not a great reader but I love crime-fiction, sci-fi and fantasy adventure stories (huge Game of Thrones fan). Best read lately was ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" -- a poignant story about a boy navigating the world with autism which is very relevant to me as an autism mum myself.

Name one movie that inspires you? There are many but ‘The Piano’ is an all-time favourite. The score, the photography and the story are all hauntingly beautiful… and it was filmed at one of my favourite local beaches!

How do you handle self-doubt or creative slumps? With a road trip!! Nothing like new scenery to get the inspiration back. I do struggle with self-doubt though. Taking a break definitely helps.

What has been the most difficult part of your creative journey? Learning to balance it with family life. I can get quite obsessive when I’m really inspired and find it difficult to ‘switch off’ and be fully present so I’ve had to really work at it.

Who is one of your favourite photographers? Honestly, there are just too many to name one… I just can’t!!
