Emma is a mother of 2 spirited boys in her very early 40’s. She is a dog lover and lives in the UK with her family, Edith the whippet and Hugo the miniature dachshund.

Emma has a 25 year medical background but a burning passion for photography. It was not long after having children that she started taking photos and realised over a period that she had a natural talent for it. One DSLR later and she was lost in a whole new world of photography books and online tutorials. The subsequent years spent doggedly honing that skill and experimenting with fancy techniques had earned her several international awards.

Emma’s passion for capturing her children and animals, combined with the true British grit of car parks and derelict buildings (as opposed to beautiful sunset beaches – she does live in the centre of England after all) became an almost obsessive focus to strive to capture something truly beautiful and unique, whilst creating images and pictures that were utterly approachable, accessible and enjoyed by everyone. As a consequence, Emma ended up loving her adaptation to the surroundings that were freely accessible to her and now embraces it. Her obsession with dirt and imperfection enables her to challenge the norm.

Her work is beguiling, and has been described as breathtaking. As intricate and complex as it is bare and naked, a truly rare quality in a self-taught photographer.

WHAT INSPIRED YOUR ART? 

Discovering Instagram and the amazing community of such talented female photographers has been a huge inspiration to me. I sometimes draw inspiration from my reams!

WHAT DO YOU SHOOT WITH? CAMERA BODY AND FAVORITE LENS? 

Canon 5D iii, Canon 70D, Canon 50mm 1.4 (go to lens), Canon 35mm 1.4, Canon EF 70-200 2.8 USM.

WHAT OTHER WAYS DO YOU EXPRESS YOUR CREATIVITY? 

I draw or paint temporary tattoos on the boys, I spend hours doing thus during the summer.

HOW DO YOU DE-STRESS AT THE END OF THE DAY? 

Wine.

WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU LISTEN TO WHILE EDITING? 

Up until I had children I ALWAYS had music on. At home, in the car, at work, everywhere! These days I make the most of the silence when I can get it. I love music and I almost find it a distraction to my editing, if I’m listening to music I want to really listen to it, not just have it as background noise. I like melancholy stuff. Daughter and Bears Den.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BOOK? 

The Art of Racing in the Rain by Gareth Stein.  Or any good psychological thriller that’ll keep you awake at night.

NAME ONE MOVIE THAT INSPIRES YOU. 

I struggle to sit through a whole film. I prefer a good drama series, 1 hour a day! Short attention span I guess. If I didn’t have children I wouldn’t own a TV. This is a long answer for ‘name 1 movie’. I Like Trainspotting, Pride and Prejudice and Billy Elliot, off the top of my head.

HOW DO YOU HANDLE SELF-DOUBT OR CREATIVE SLUMPS?

Really badly.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST DIFFICULT PART OF YOUR CREATIVE JOURNEY? 

Having no one to ask. I learned to use my camera from scratch, alone. The technical stuff still sometimes blows my mind.
