Murielle Cascone, Unraveled | An Interview

Murielle Cascone is a photographer and mother located in New York. She is not only one of the most recent artists accepted into our Unraveled Expert Artist program, but she is also a moderator in our Facebook group and an instructor in the Academy. To say her presence is appreciated would be an understated. We are very lucky to have her. Her work is a combination of lifestyle, candid and posed photography. We are specifically drawn to the creative and timeless portraits she takes of her beautiful daughter.

Learn from Murielle in the Academy.

Also, did you know that our UEA’s are the first to be considered when teaching opportunities open up here at UA? So, if teaching at the Academy is on your bucket list, we welcome you to apply to become a UEA here like Murielle.

Thank you to Murielle for being here and sharing your passion with us.

Here is Murielle, Unraveled…

WHAT INSPIRED YOUR ART?

Light, emotion, my daughter/essence of childhood, mood, color, nature and my country Haiti where everything is bright and colorful. I could never be a strictly black and white artist as I love colors and love to bring them out in my composition whenever possible. But there are shots that are so emotive or quiet that the distraction that sometimes colors can bring should be stripped out so the mood or emotion is emphasized. I adore emotive black and whites!

WHAT DO YOU SHOOT WITH? CAMERA BODY AND FAVORITE LENS?

I shoot with a Canon 5D Mark III. I use mostly the Canon 24-70mm, 85mm and 50mm for freelancing. But I also have and love the Canon 135mm, 40mm pancake (for city trips), Lensbaby Sweet 35, Sol 45, Edge 80, Velvet 56, Helios 44 and Sigma Art 35. It really depends on where I am, what/who I'm shooting and effect I would love to get. I'm a big fan of bokeh and blur!

WHAT OTHER WAYS DO YOU EXPRESS YOUR CREATIVITY?

I actually don't express my creativity any other way. Way before my daughter was born I used to scrapbook if that counts.

HOW DO YOU DE-STRESS AT THE END OF THE DAY?

At the end of the day, after my daughter is in bed, because my days are usually super long with a full-time job two hours away from home, I get comfortable on our super comfy couch with my laptop and I edit while watching TV. Editing is therapeutic to me.

WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU LISTEN TO WHILE EDITING?

When I edit on the train (to or from work), I edit to music (anything with great lyrics and a good beat!). At home I edit with the TV in the background.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BOOK?

I used to know the answer to this question when I used to read a lot. I had a few. When I fell in love with photography, my whole world because consumed by it. On my free time, I immersed myself in photography reading. Right now, I will say the Game of Thrones series. I remember also enjoying The Help, City of Thieves, Cutting for Stone and A Thousand Splendid Suns.

NAME ONE MOVIE THAT INSPIRES YOU.

That's a really hard one for me. I don't have one in particular. There are so many great movies with great stories and imagery!

HOW DO YOU HANDLE SELF-DOUBT OR CREATIVE SLUMPS?

Oh I have a few! Learning who I was as an artist, finding my voice, staying motivated to get better, knowing my self-worth, finding self-confidence (as a Caribbean artist and photography business owner) and having no shame in carrying around my big camera and lens to places such as Target or Whole Foods.

WHO IS ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE PHOTOGRAPHERS?

Anna Aromin. I love the photos of her children and her nature shots. She's amazing with light and vintage lenses. I got the Helios because of her. She's also genuinely nice. I also love Emma Wood and so many photographers in this Unraveled community!
