Unraveled Expert Artist Interview, Cody Farrall, UEA

Join us in congratulating Cody Farrall on becoming an Unraveled Expert Artist! One thing that is clear about Cody’s work is that light is what inspires her most and she is always chasing it.

Cody is a photographer living in rural Nebraska with her farmer husband, three growing-up-too-fast kids, 2 pups and 4 cats. She is a storyteller, but instead of words, uses photos. Her 2020 and 2021 scrapbooks are unfinished because it's hard to put everything into words and paragraphs...so instead, she just takes more photos.

She first picked up a camera in 2013 to document her family life, but that quickly grew into an obsession that launched a photography business in 2016. Intending to shoot strictly documentary, now Cody's focus is family, newborn, and senior portraits, with some weddings thrown in for fun.

Here is Cody, Unraveled…

What inspires your art?

Light. Always light. I adore golden hour light, sun flare, pockets of light shining through the trees, and water sparkles from the light hitting the lake.

What do you shoot with? Camera body and favorite lens?

I adore my Nikon Z6 and Z6ii. They are usually paired with my 85mm for client work and my 28mm or Lensbaby Velvet 56 for personal photos!

What other ways do you express your creativity?

I scrapbook, which is how I got into photography in the first place! I wanted my photos to look as pretty as my scrapbook pages.

How do you de-stress at the end of the day?

A long, hot bath with a good book.

What kind of music do you listen to while editing?

I'm not a music person, but I love podcasts! Usually photography or parenting related.

What is your favorite book?

Gone with the Wind. Pretense. (Almost) all of Elin Hilderbrand's books. Firefly Lane. The Dream Daughter. Her Last Flight. I really just love to read!

Name one movie that inspires you.

I really don't watch a lot of movies!

How do you handle self-doubt or creative slumps?

For creative slumps...I wait. I can't push through it or I will hate everything. I've learned that I will be inspired again and that inspiration will probably hit at a crazy time and all I will want to do is go out and shoot.

For self-doubt, it always helps to go back and look at where I came from. I try to only compare myself to my past self and it's easy to feel better about my photos when I look back at what I was creating in 2016/17/18.

What has been the most difficult part of your creative journey?

Believing that I am good enough. I'm afraid to take risks and I tend to play it safe when I'm shooting. When I can finally let go and just go for it, that's when I love my work the most.

What is your favorite pizza topping?

Ham, pineapple, green peppers, and mushrooms.

What is your most favorite kind of light and why?

Golden hour, always!

Who is one of your favorite photographers?

Stormy Solis. My photography has changed because of her!

What is your favorite course or lesson at Unraveled?

Oh, so many!! I love The Family Experience, Golden Hour Photography, and Capturing Connections and Overcoming Anxiety + Doubt!
