Unraveled Expert Artist Interview | Jacinta Scales, UEA

So typically when I write a little bio about whomever we are interviewing, I take the time to peruse their website and social media to get a feel for who they are and what they stand for. I also admire their art and take the time to really consider it. I was lucky enough to meet Jacinta Scales, of Thirty Five & Oaks, in real life though, so this one was a little extra special for me. She’s a beautiful, quiet soul. Her work speaks for itself, truly.

I absolutely loved the way she wrote her own bio on her website so I thought I would share that with you all before sharing the interview below.

β€œI am a wildly curious, usually scattered, and super intentional artist. I value slowness and space to process and feel all the things, both in my home and in my craft. My husband and I are living our best life in a 400 sq. ft. studio in the city. And are all about any excuse to travel, cook, and create. I am a water-child. Always barefoot. Lover of hammocks, last-minute adventures, and any day my plants don’t die. We seek oneness in marriage and are advocates for Jesus and the life-giving community he enables us to have with Himself and each other.

I want all my photographs to embody connection, motion, and honesty. And to tell stories in a way that makes my people feel known and seen and valued.”

Isn’t she the loveliest?

NAME ONE MOVIE THAT INSPIRES YOU.

This month? Short Term 12, an indie fiction film shot almost like a documentary. Free-to-watch on Youtube and it is a look into the life of a house parent in the foster system. We do not see too many accurate depictions, let alone depictions at all, of this field. It's hard to watch. But it's one of those things that should be.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST DIFFICULT PART OF YOUR CREATIVE JOURNEY?

Anxiety. Giving myself permission to freely be myself. An audience watching, critiquing, and sizing up my art (which to me, really is my heart-and-all-those-deep-inside-soul-things).

WHO IS ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE PHOTOGRAPHERS?

Jessica Tremp
