Here is jessica, Unraveled…
What inspires your art?
At the core, I am inspired by the duality of beauty and chaos that is motherhood.
Every time I pick up my camera, my intention is to capture fleeting, challenging, sometimes unappreciated chapters of motherhood in a manner which allows mothers to see these moments through a more forgiving, outside perspective – one of grace, love, and of purpose.
What do you shoot with? Camera body and favorite lens?
Canon EOS R ; Canon 35mm 1.4 or 50mm 1.2
What other ways do you express your creativity?
Prior to being a photographer (just three short years ago) my creativity was expressed through educating. I was a teacher for a few years, and then a teacher coach/professional development coordinator. I still love designing educational opportunities for others and find it incredibly rewarding. I like to unpack a goal/learning objective and then create multiple avenues of learning and support for others (or myself) to reach it. This may not be something that typically comes to mind when someone thinks of creative expression, but for me it fills my creative bucket.
How do you de-stress at the end of the day?
A glass of red wine or reading a few pages of a good book
What kind of music do you listen to while editing?
I was born in 1989, so (obviously) I'm a Swifty.
What is your favorite book?
Anything Gillian Flynn
Name one movie that inspires you.
I would choose a book+movie combo…The Giver
How do you handle self-doubt or creative slumps?
I remind myself that anytime I'm feeling less than amazing about my work, that's because I'm growing. If I was 100% content with my work, that would mean I didn't have higher expectations for myself, future goals, or room to grow. I never want to stop learning, and failing/self-doubt/creative slumps are all a part of that.
What has been the most difficult part of your creative journey?
I first picked up a camera at the start of Covid when my twins were about 10 weeks old. I was looking for a hobby, but found myself starting a business within just a couple of months. I didn't really have time to take a breathe and map out my "destination" so to speak, so I've been learning and growing a business that is sometimes difficult to contain while also full-time mommin'. It's been hard to separate my work and my life the past 3 years, but I'm startling to get the hang of it.
What is your favorite pizza topping?
Pineapple. I'm one of "them."
What is your most favorite kind of light and why?
I love shooting in homes with ample windows and natural light, or in open shade, because it gives me more room to be creative with backdrops and ideas and poses, and isn't limiting to the direction.
Who is one of your favorite photographers?
Olesya Alferenko because her work is so incredibly creative and diverse. Emily Hodge because her work is so soulful.
What is your favorite course or lesson at Unraveled?
Art Indoors by Annie Nelson. There are so few other artists who often shoot indoors, so I'm grateful to have Annie's company.
