Unraveled Expert Artist Interview | Jen Joseph, UEA
Join us in congratulating Jen Joseph on becoming one of our newest Unraveled Expert Artists!
We love having Jen in our community because she brings a different perspective. Many artists call themselves “lifestyle” photographers, and although that term is very general, Jen’s work embodies real and raw life captures.
Jen is a newborn, family, and branding photographer in Washington, DC. She loves to tell visual stories, and strives to create images that are raw, authentic, and nostalgic. Jen’s love of photography started in a middle school elective - film cameras, dark room, and all!
A few years ago, Jen decided to run toward the things that bring her joy and turned this passion into a business. When she is not photographing someone, Jen can be found: adventuring, spending time with her people, traveling, reading, or petting dogs (her own or someone else’s).
Welcome Jen! We are so thrilled to have you in our community and NOW a UEA!

What inspires your art?
I am inspired by REAL connection, nostalgia, raw and authentic emotion. I love capturing the in between moments and being a fly on the wall while documenting.
What do you shoot with? Camera body and favorite lens?
Canon R5 + Canon EF 35 f/1.4L
What other ways do you express your creativity?
I also love cooking and baking…and sometimes mediocre dancing. Ha!
How do you de-stress at the end of the day?
I usually destress by reading or going to a yoga class. I also love to get lost in a good tv show!
What kind of music do you listen to while editing?
I’ll often listen to podcasts while I edit. I like hearing people talk as background noise. If I do have music on while I edit, it’s hip hop, jazz, or the Red Hot Chili Peppers!
What is your favorite book?
A Knock at Midnight by Brittany K. Barnett
Name one movie that inspires you.
Vertigo, by Alfred Hitchcock. I love his movies, and find them so visually intriguing that I don’t want to look away. Family and brand photography is obviously a different vibe, but I think a good image has some of those same elements. Striking, intriguing, draws you in and tells a story.
How do you handle self-doubt or creative slumps?
By taking a break. Typically when I get into a self doubt spiral or start to feel uninspired, it means that I need to step away for a bit. So, instead of pushing through I find it helpful to do something else that makes me happy.
What has been the most difficult part of your creative journey?
The most difficult part of my creative journey has been gaining confidence and letting go of perfectionism.
What is your favorite pizza topping?
Depends a little on my mood - but either mushrooms, green peppers, and onions OR pepperoni.
Now I want pizza!
What is your most favorite kind of light and why?
I like side light because I enjoy some light/dark contrast in photos. I love the the dimension it creates.
Who is one of your favorite photographers?
Allie Clarke! Talk about stop you in your tracks, gorgeous, storytelling images!
What is your favorite course or lesson at Unraveled?
My favorite Unraveled course is “Artful Family Storytelling” with Annie Nelson. I really liked the Angles and Composition for Storytelling section where Annie talks about using different angles (even from the same scene) to tell a story.
