Unraveled Expert Artist Interview | Kailey Nagymarosi

Congratulations to the very sweet and absurdly talented Kailey Nagymarosi on her acceptance as an Unraveled Expert Artist. We are honored to have her as a member of our community and look forward to her stepping into this role as a leader here. Her work is cozy and nostalgic and makes you feel right at home. There is a softness that she brings to her photographs which feels so welcoming and comfortable.

Kailey Nagymarosi is a free flowing empath, heart lead photographer, but above all, mom of three amazing littles and married to her best friend Steven. When she is not capturing engaging moments for other families, you can find Kailey listening to music with a good local craft beer out back with her husband, or off on an afternoon adventure with the kids for ice cream and walk in nature. Kailey finally picked up a DSLR after having her second child, and the world of photography seemingly unraveled. With a degree in psychology and child and youth studies, Kailey never thought her passion would go in the direction of photography, but she has followed with curiosity ever since. Specializing in family and newborn in-home sessions in the Durham Region (Ontario), and surrounding areas, Kailey creates an experience for her clients while capturing a precious memory within her imagery. There is beauty to be found in everyday happenings, from play and joyful chaos to delicate and ever shifting feelings and emotions. Even when things seem uncertain, we can create a moment of beauty, in this present moment, and always.

Here is Kailey, Unraveled…

What inspires your art?

My three littles, they are my reason.
Others, the awe I have observing real connections, free flowing feelings and emotion. Sometimes I am driven by feeling the need to give a moment, and sometimes I feel like it may be one for me and my own heart.
The present moment, delicate and ever shifting.

What do you shoot with? Camera body and favorite lens?

Canon 5D Mark IV and back up Mark III
I would say I use my 35mm most often but I like to play with my other lenses too. At times I will rotate between using my 50mm and 85 mm I have also started bringing my 24-70 back out again.

What other ways do you express your creativity?

Crafting and mess making!
I am also always up for trying new things. I would love to take painting or pottery lessons again.

How do you de-stress at the end of the day?

A slow meal and a glass of wine …feet up…watching the sunset…i'm kidding!
... Maybe a cold beer while I edit and listen to a true crime podcast or a night off with Netflix and ice cream before I fall asleep sitting up. THESE are the days! This is why we live on coffee right?!

What kind of music do you listen to while editing?

Mumford and Sons, Harrison Storm, The National, Bon iver and often Maggie Rogers or Frank Sinatra when the littles are at my feet

What is your favorite book?

It’s been a while since I have given books proper attention. The last full read was Untamed by Glennon Doyle and I loved it, Braving The Wilderness by Brene Brown ( I love all Brene Brown) and my all time favourite Alice In Wonderland

Name one movie that inspires you.

I choose a good series binge over movies - This is Us, New Amsterdam, Shameless, and I am currently amused by the use of light in The Handmaids Tale

How do you handle self-doubt or creative slumps?

Ooh it’s not easy. Self doubt and imposter syndrome plague me often.
Sometimes It helps to talk through it …other times I need to get quiet and just allow the waves to pass as they will.
It’s a never ending roller coaster and I am working on trying to ride with my hands up as often as I can.

What has been the most difficult part of your creative journey?

Allowing for all the uncertainty.
The soul searching , finding my own creative voice and building confidence. Believing that I am worthy and that I have something beautiful to share. For a long time I waited for a hand to reach out and pull me along. Someone to lead me in the right direction and tell me what choices to make. It took time, but I am thankful to recognize the hand is my own. It’s up to me to forge my own way. I believe it was Chase Jarvis who said “Creativity isn’t a map, its a compass."
“When I’ve lost my way or when I am confused about a path to take, I remember that most answers I need I already possess. I am naturally creative, resourceful and whole. If I consult my invisible compass, I’ll know what to do."

What is your favorite pizza topping?

I think it's all in the combinations!
We are big pizza fans here and lately we have been going for tons of fresh mozzarella with garden tomato and basil or bacon, red pepper and pineapple. Really though, I would eat any and all pizza!

What is your most favorite kind of light and why?

I am moment first…I will work with what I have but given the choice I get all giddy for golden hour.
I also love playing with the often surprising variety within homes.

Who is one of your favorite photographers?

My list would be endless… but I will keep it to a just a few favourites here for now
Maggie Rechkemmer, Jesse Salter, Danielle Dobson, Tiffany Benaquista and Sarah Driscoll.

What is your favorite course or lesson at Unraveled?

Now I begin to show my pattern of indecisiveness but seriously, how can I choose! I love diving into the new material monthly if I can. When I am in my biggest ruts and I don’t feel like shooting this is when I spend the most time digging in until I feel inspired again.
Big ones for me this year were Embracing the Mundane with Chloe Rosser & Blocking the Noise: Avoiding the Comparison Trap with Sarai Jacobs, I also loved Creating Living Poetry with Jodi Lynn Buckles and Seeing Your Home in a New Light with Karen Dell
