We are so excited to welcome Katherine Spooner into our tribe of Unraveled Expert Artists and introduce you all to her today. From the moment our team opened her portfolio, we were completely smitten with her work and overall vibe. Her work has a way of putting you at ease, giving you a laid-back California, vintage vibe; while her passion, drive and intrinsic creativity make her a must-watch artist. The timelessness of her work along with her outside-of-the-box thinking is impressive and inspiring. We are beyond thrilled to welcome her to the growing list of Unraveled Expert Artists and look forward to have her join us as an instructor here at the Academy in late 2020.

What inspired your art?

Heart. And good lines. Connection and Compassion. The real laugh happens after the fake. Just remember that

What other ways do you express your creativity?

I paint and write. I always look for an excuse to connect with my heart. I feel like if there is heart in it than it will come naturally. I am super hard on myself and I think that is why my progression has happened.

How do you de-stress at the end of the day?

I cook. I love cooking. if not that I would head to the beach with my 4 kiddos and watch the sunset with a burrito in hand. That to me is everything. There is no greater cure than sea and sand for me. but to be competely honest I put the kiddos to bed and sit with my husband over a nice cocktail

What kind of music do you listen to while editing?

I love jack Johnson and donavan frankenriter as well as Nora jones but a lot of times its silent. I am good with being with myself alone without noise. then allot of times there is kids shoes blaring because my office is right next to the tv room where the kids hang while edit during the day

What is your favorite book?

CS Lewis the four loves

the gladiator

What has been the most difficult part of your creative journey?

not feeling seen or heard. sometimes when you feel like you have magic at your finger tips but no one gives a care in the world its hard. There was a day when someone asked me my purpose for photography and I could tell them what it was. later that same day I had an editorial shoot. the mom who was there just jived with me. I opened up to her and asked her what she thought my purpose was in photography. she said something so simple yet so profound. she sad " you are doing it love. you are here doing something you love. no matter how messy or crazy or no outline or you took the long way you are doing it." so true and from then on I shot for myself and with my vision. not trying to fit into the box of what I thought people wanted to see I shot with what I saw and edited the same

Who is one of your favorite photographers?

it was Tarah Sweeney for a while but lately it has switched to a girl names ester canon and my all time fav a skate board legend Brian Fick

How do you handle selfdoubt or creative slumps?

sometimes I pull away and put down my camera I emerge myself in my family and wait. its ok to wait. its ok not to feel something but when it comes it comes strong.

What is your favorite pizza topping?

ohhhh I love pesto chicken sun-dried tomatoes and feta cheese pizza smothered with Tapatio

What is your most favorite kind of light and why?

I love the golden hour, but also right after the blue hour. I only shoot natural light so for my studio looks I love high noon
