Unraveled Expert Artist Interview | Katie Wilson, UEA

We are so thrilled to welcome Katie Wilson to the blog today! Congrats on becoming an Unraveled Expert Artist, Katie! Katie’s work is centered around capturing moments and speaking to people’s heart.

Hi! I'm Katie Wilson, and I'm a lifestyle photographer based in Cincinnati, OH. I specialize in lifestyle family, motherhood, and couples photography. I love capturing the real, good-for-the-soul moments that tell a story with my lens. My style can be described as warm, authentic and artsy. I picked up a camera for the first time just under 3 years ago, and started my photography business about 2 and a half years ago. I have just been obsessed ever since.

Aside from photography, my husband and I are college sweethearts and he is the best. I'm a mom to three beautiful babies (5, 2, and 8 months old) and I cannot get enough of them. They are my world. They really spark my creativity and love "helping" me on my photoshoots. I love all Italian food, and could eat pizza everyday. Coffee, IPA's and country music are my jam. I'm a travel enthusiast, a lover of people and new experiences. My happy place is barefoot, in sweats, and cuddled up with my people.

I'm so very thankful for the Unraveled community. This is a special place where I have met so many talented and kind artists. I am so excited to continue connecting with all of you and growing together!

What inspires your art?

My art is inspired by nostalgia. I want my art to make you feel something. When you look at my work I want it to say, "this is telling me a story that gives me such a sense of warmth and nostalgia, and I can just feel the good ol' days being captured right in front of me".

What do you shoot with? Camera body and favorite lens?

I shoot with a Canon R6 and my favorite lens is my 24-70mm.

What other ways do you express your creativity?

I like to cook (not that I'm very good at it) but I like to attempt haha.

How do you de-stress at the end of the day?

I love to binge watch whatever show my husband and I are watching, and honestly, editing or learning something new in the photography world.

What kind of music do you listen to while editing?

I listen to a mix of music! I love country, rock, indie, and pop.

What is your favorite book?

My favorite book is The Magic of Motherhood.

Name one movie that inspires you.

This is going to be unexpected for an inspirational movie, but Runaway Bride! There's lots of things I take away from that movie, but probably the biggest lesson is to stay true to yourself. That's important to remember in photography with so many different trends, falling into the comparison trap, and imposter syndrome. I really love how it always helps me to remember that I will always be happiest when I stay true to myself.

How do you handle self-doubt or creative slumps?

When I am in a slump or start to self-doubt, I shoot more. I'll set up creative shoots, do self-portraits, or focus on practicing new techniques with my kiddos!

What has been the most difficult part of your creative journey?

The most difficult part of my creative journey so far has been dealing with imposter syndrome. I still feel unsure of my work sometimes or that I want to be better than I am. As I've continued in my journey though, I've learned to really give myself grace, and embrace the imperfect. That is when I found lifestyle photography and WHY I absolutely love it. In these lifestyle family sessions that I shoot most often, I WANT the imperfect. That's when you get the real stuff. The memories you want to hold onto. I love the storytelling piece of it.

What is your favorite pizza topping?

Can it be toppings?! My favorites are pepperoni, pineapple and banana peppers together.

What is your most favorite kind of light and why?

Morning light! It's so soft and dreamy. And I also LOVE playing with direct patches of sunlight.

Who is one of your favorite photographers?

One of my favorite photographers is actually in this group, Olesya Alferenko. I think her work is so beautiful and tells such a magical story every time. She has really inspired me over this last year.

What is your favorite course or lesson at Unraveled?

How do I choose?! One of my favorites is Every Day | Documenting Life with Allie Clarke
