Here is April, Unraveled…
What inspires your art?
Honestly, real life. The chaos, the belly laughs, the quiet glances, the moments you didn’t realize were beautiful until they were frozen in time. I’m constantly inspired by people being fully themselves, kids running wild, seniors stepping into who they’re becoming, mamas soaking up their babies (and seniors), and business owners chasing big dreams. But more than anything, my inspiration comes from my faith. I see God’s hand in light, connection, and those little in-between moments that so often go unnoticed. Photography is my way of slowing it all down and saying, “Lookit! This is the good stuff. This is what matters.”
Also… wildflowers, messy hair, golden hour, and the occasional coffee run don’t hurt either.
What do you shoot with? Camera body and favorite lens?
I use a Canon R6 (and Canon R6 Mark II) paired with my trusty 50mm 1.2, aka my ride-or-die setup. It’s fast, dreamy, and perfect for capturing all the real, raw, joy-filled moments I live for. Whether I’m shooting seniors or families, that 50mm lets me stay close enough to feel the emotion without getting all up in your space. Basically, it sees the world the way I do, full of light, and a little blur in the background for drama. (For larger groups or studio shots, I looooove my Canon 28-70 2.0. It's a workhorse!)
What other ways do you express your creativity?
Honestly, there are some days I don’t feel creative at all, just keeping it real. But then something sparks again. Right now, opening my studio has brought a whole new wave of inspiration. Painting walls, planning out rooms, and making a space that feels like me has been such a fun creative outlet.
It's also football/cheer time so I love getting creative with my sports sessions, playing with movement, light, and moments that feel powerful and personal. Some days creativity shows up loud and clear… other days, it’s just a really well-timed coffee and a playlist that gets me moving again.
How do you de-stress at the end of the day?
Easy. A glass of wine on my porch swing (that my mama built), watching the sun dip behind the ranch. The soundtrack? Cicadas buzzing or bullfrogs croaking at the tank. The doggies (Oakley, Baxter + George) are either running circles playing fetch, chasing lizards or pooped out on the swing right next to me. It’s peaceful, simple, and the perfect reminder that slow moments are just as sweet as the loud ones.
What kind of music do you listen to while editing?
Well… I don’t. I try to listen to audiobooks, but then I get too into the photos, miss half the plot, and end up rewinding 14 times. Other times, I’m just talking to myself like a crazy lady... hyping myself up, overanalyzing skin tones, or narrating what I’m doing like I’m on a cooking show. So basically… silence, confusion, and occasional self-dialogue. 😂
What is your favorite book?
Oh man… I love books. Like, a lot. I’ve got approximately one million titles in my Audible library because... confession, I cannot read. Okay, I can read, but my ADHD has other plans. I’ll finish a paragraph and immediately forget what it said! Give me a spicy small-town mystery by Lucy Score, or a totally unhinged serial killer thriller by Nora Roberts, and I’m happy. But I also adore a good character-driven story from Kristin Hannah or Ann Patchett. No mystery, no murder, just vibes. That said, my all-time favorite author is probably Colleen Hoover. She’s from central Texas like me, also a boy mom x3, and her books just pull you in. I swear I can see the whole story playing out in my mind like a movie, until they make it an actual movie, and I’m like... um… that is absolutely NOT what that character looks like.
Name one movie that inspires you.
Honestly, I can’t sit still long enough to watch a full movie... but I am obsessed with Gilmore Girls. The cozy fall settings, the endless cups of coffee, and the rapid-fire, witty banter totally inspire me. It’s like a warm hug for my creative soul, reminding me how much personality and atmosphere matter... whether in photos or in life.
How do you handle self-doubt or creative slumps?
I drink wine. Just kidding… kind of. 😅 Honestly, I usually grab a senior girl, throw a pretty dress in the truck, and we head to the back pasture for a fun, no-pressure shoot. Creating just to create... no rules, no expectations. It reminds me why I fell in love with this in the first place. A little dirt, a little golden light (sometimes bugs), and suddenly the spark comes back. During these sessions I get all the ideas for other fun stuff!
What has been the most difficult part of your creative journey?
The most difficult part of my creative journey has been walking it without my sister. She was my everything, my best friend, the one who believed in me when I couldn't see it for myself. Before she passed away from breast cancer in 2022, she made me promise to chase this dream. I kept that promise, and God has been so faithful, pouring blessings into this business in ways I never imagined. But the ache of her absence never leaves. Every session, every shutter click, carries her with me. She's the whisper behind my courage, the light in my lens, and the reason I keep showing up, even when it hurts.
What is your favorite pizza topping?
Cheese! duh! It's like the glue holding my life together! (and once I get to the pizza, one of my boys has already picked off all the meat!)
What is your most favorite kind of light and why?
Golden hour, hands down. It’s soft, dreamy, and makes everyone look like they belong in a movie (cue the slow motion running and glowy skin tones). It may sound cliche but it really is the best. But... I also love a good studio vibe with soft glowy light on the subject's face.
Who is one of your favorite photographers?
I have so many photographers I admire, it’s hard to pick just one! Emily with Simply Blessings Photography absolutely blows me away with her epic locations and the way she captures real moments. Amber Thorson and Annie Nelson make me swoon with their dreamy tones. And Ace Fanning! I love how he gets super creative with direct sunlight, turning bright light into pure magic. Honestly, I’m inspired by so many. They push me to keep experimenting and finding my own style.
What is your favorite course or lesson at Unraveled?
There are sooo many courses I’m excited to dive into, but one that I love is the 35mm film course by Tracy. It gives me all the nostalgic feels... like flipping through childhood memories with that dreamy, grainy goodness. Total inspiration.
