Unraveled Expert Artist Interview | Zoe Hather, UEA
Join us in congratulating Zoe Hather on becoming an Unraveled Expert Artist! Zoe’s work is creative, playful, and emphasizes beautiful pastel tones and a whimsical softness. She specializes in Child Portraiture.
She lives in the United Kingdom in the historic City of York, in a magical Georgian house by the river with her two children, who are her whole world, her inspiration, and her favourite subjects to photograph.
She strives to give them the most idyllic childhood she can – traveling with her family and taking meaningful photographs of the people she loves is her passion!
What inspires your art?
My children, our connection, our lifestyle together and travels, colours that I love, and lately joy! All the joy!
Despite the challenges of daily life, I want to capture the joy, and savour it.
What do you shoot with? Camera body and favorite lens?
I think everything in life is art, what you do, how you dress, the way you love someone and how you talk, your smile and your personality, what you believe in, and all your dreams, the way you drink your tea, how you decorate your house or party, your grocery list, the food you make, how your writing looks, and the way you feel, life is art'. Helena Bonham Carter
That pretty much sums it up for me!
Nikon D850, my go to lens is my Sigma Art 35, 1.4
What other ways do you express your creativity?
I think everything in life is art, what you do, how you dress, the way you love someone and how you talk, your smile and your personality, what you believe in, and all your dreams, the way you drink your tea, how you decorate your house or party, your grocery list, the food you make, how your writing looks, and the way you feel, life is art'. Helena Bonham Carter
That pretty much sums it up for me!
How do you de-stress at the end of the day?
Candlelight and a warm bath, scents that I love in my home.
Watching a good movie with a cosy blanket and a warm fire when it's cold.
What kind of music do you listen to while editing?
Lately I really love to listen to podcasts when I edit, and I'm making my way through all of the conversations with Amanda de Cadenet
What is your favorite book?
I have a pile of books by my bed, unread!
An old favourite of mine is Marcovaldo by Italo Calvino, it's so funny and so very brilliant, a humorous social commentary of Italy in the 1950s/60s.
My favourite Children's book is The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse, by Charlie Mackesy.
Name one movie that inspires you.
Breakfast at Tiffany's is my absolute favourite.
I adore this movie, New York 1940s, and Audrey Hepburn as "top banana in the shock department'!
How do you handle self-doubt or creative slumps?
Self compassion, patience, giving myself time and accepting the opportunity to pause.
Taking a course at Unraveled!
What has been the most difficult part of your creative journey?
I suppose when my daughter isn't interested in having her photo taken!
She is my favourite person on the planet to photograph and she is not always keen!
So finding the energy to stay motivated and keep creating what's in my heart.
Also learning to let go and allowing myself to evolve and move on in my work.
What is your favorite pizza topping?
Either just basil, or artichokes, mushrooms and black olives. I lived in Sardinia for 4 years, I love pizza so much!
What is your most favorite kind of light and why?
I love the dappled light that dances around my home, it feels like such a gift and I need to photograph it more.
Who is one of your favorite photographers?
Nicki Bergeson. I love the joy she captures in her work, and how every image of her's feels like a true authentic most precious moment frozen.
And Sarah Driscoll, I am totally in love with everything Sarah does, she is a huge, huge, inspiration to me.
What is your favorite course or lesson at Unraveled?
Absolutely everything by Sarah Driscoll especially Blurred Creative Practice.
