Vortex Retreat in Sedona: What Happens When Internet Friends Become Real Life Friends
There is something wildly special about watching people who have spent years cheering each other on through a screen finally hug in real life.
Back in April, we gathered in the red rocks of Sedona for our Vortex Retreat, a photography retreat that somehow became so much more than photography. Yes, there were beautiful shoots, creative conversations, business breakthroughs, desert sunsets, and moments where inspiration seemed to find us around every corner. But if we’re being honest, the thing that lingers long after the bags are unpacked is always the people.
There is something healing about sitting around a kitchen island with women who somehow feel familiar, even if you only met them 24 hours ago. The kind of people who laugh hard, cry when you need them to, hype you up when your confidence is shaky, and somehow make you feel completely at home while standing in the middle of the Arizona desert.
One attendee described it in a way we probably never could:
“Showing up to this retreat felt like when I was a kid riding my bike around the block looking for anyone outside to play. And then stumbling upon the coolest group of girls that like the same things and never wanting the sun to go down so I never have to go home.”
Honestly? That one got us.
Because that’s exactly what these retreats feel like.
So many photographers spend years creating in isolation. Editing alone. Learning alone. Wondering if they’re the only one overthinking everything or craving something deeper from their art. And then suddenly, you’re in a house full of people who understand why you care so much. People who see the world the way you do. People who somehow feel like internet friends and old friends all at once.
As one attendee shared:
“Honestly I went into Sedona just excited to be with friends and meet like minded people and I left there with a new mindset and fully inspired not just in my work but in my life.”
Another said Sedona was “everything my heart needed. Inspiring, soul-shifting, creatively recharging, and filled with the kind of people who feel like instant forever friends.”
And maybe that is the magic of a creative retreat like this. Yes, you leave with photos. Yes, you learn and grow and create. But you also leave reminded that you do not have to do this alone.
So if you’ve ever wondered what an Unraveled retreat actually feels like… here’s a little glimpse. The art, the desert, the late-night conversations, the moments in between, and the people who somehow stop feeling like strangers almost immediately. Scroll slow.
You can find your people. You can sit around a dinner table with artists who make you feel safe enough to be yourself. You can hug your internet friends in real life. And trust us, it’s even better than you imagined.
