Unraveled Expert Artist Interview | Robyn Scherer, UEA

We are so thrilled to welcome Robyn Scherer to the blog today! Her knack for SEEING (and documenting) high school seniors is extraordinary. She has a way of capturing their personalities, rather than just their appearance.

Robyn is a mother and photographer living in Sunny San Diego and travels around the county capturing the personalities of High School Seniors and the love within families!

She's had a passion for photography since her early teens and has been running her boutique business for the last 8 years. She also works very closely with a local high school creating the senior portraits for their yearbook along with capturing the excitement of the events held on campus.

Robyn has 3 children and has been married to her soulmate for 26 years. She loves running and Hershey Kisses and has been known to order bags straight from the factory! Another pastime that speaks to her heart is traveling with her family! Traveling with her family fills up her heart as well as fills up her creative, explorative side.

She's a talker by nature and can talk to anyone but is usually found working quietly at home with Luke Combs playing in the background alongside her two Golden Retrievers, Mabel Jane and June Elliott.

Here is Robyn, Unraveled…

What inspires your art?

I started my business with a focus on young women in high school. I created a blog entitled: Portraits That Speak - What it’s like growing up in the digital age. I ended up speaking with and photographing 25 young women. I would ask them how it made them feel growing up in this social media age and would have them write their one word down on a chalk board and photograph them with the board and then I would create portraits of them. That was the birth of my business.

Moving forward, having two teenage daughters of my own at the time, made me realize that I could have a small impact on young women when they work with me creating their senior portraits. I feel that if for only that one hour they are with me, I have the opportunity to focus on them, make them feel incredibly special and cherished and, hopefully, that feeling would create a ripple effect of how they go forward and act in the world. In addition, they would also have their gallery to look at and remember just how beautiful they are inside and out.

As my business has evolved, I feel I have this same opportunity when working with families. That for one hour they get to focus on how wonderful their unit is and then they have the final gallery to be a constant reminder that each one of them is part of something greater. Something meaningful.

So, I suppose the bottom line is I am inspired by my own family love to go out into the world and help others see it in their own circles and within themselves.

What do you shoot with? Camera body and favorite lens?

Nikon D850
I absolutely could not live without my 50mm Sigma Art lens.

What other ways do you express your creativity?

I love scrapbooking and decorating our home. We have a 1927 Spanish Colonial Revival and we are slowly bringing back the Spanish influence in each room we update/remodel from what the previous owner had done.

How do you de-stress at the end of the day?

My go to "de-stresser" is a giant glass of sparkling water with a big handful of Hershey Kisses and our favorite series we are watching on TV at the moment.

What kind of music do you listen to while editing?

I love to listen to classic or country! I also listen to a variety of podcasts.

What is your favorite book?

Hmmmm, I read about 25 books a year....I think my favorite self help/guide is Untangled by Dr. Lisa DaMour which is about raising young women and my favorite fiction is The Help. The Gold Coast is a great read too!

Name one movie that inspires you.

This is Where I Leave You is both funny and poignant. It inspires me to remember to give people grace and that everyone has their own cross to bear and that things are not always what they seem. It's also about family and how important family is to your evolution.

How do you handle self-doubt or creative slumps?

When self doubt creeps in I will hunt out a class to take. Learning and evolving make me feel like I have some control and gives me a new lens to see through.

What has been the most difficult part of your creative journey?

Learning that I have my own voice and that my own voice is worthy. Also acknowledging that my style looks different from others because I am different and I see the world differently and that it's not only ok but it's good to be yourself.

What is your favorite pizza topping?

Veggies!

What is your most favorite kind of light and why?

I love backlight! I love the softness and golden tones and the way it envelopes my subject(s).

Who is one of your favorite photographers?

Tarah Sweeney is my favorite. I love how she captures others and how she shares open heartedly when she teaches.

What is your favorite course or lesson at Unraveled?

I love Ace's Untouched course. I loved that he pushed me to continue to seek out myself and my voice.
