Abbie Rose, Unraveled | An Interview

Abbie is a queer photographer based in Western Canada, where she lives with her exciting ten month old daughter. They enjoy finding yummy food to eat, playing with balloons, and cramming as much editing as possible into nap time. Her passions include mental health, natural wellness, birth and postpartum support, and lots of tea.

We are beyond thrilled to announce the release of Abbie’s Course, After-Baby Beauty, which she co-created with Teri Hofford. In this course, they aspire to educate and empower others to embrace their bodies and natural born beauty and to document women with honesty.

HERE IS ABBIE, UNRAVELED…

WHAT INSPIRES YOUR ART?

Ugh, there are so many inspirations. I’m super inspired by nature and light, emotion always - when I am having intense emotions is when I often create the most “me” art. Music inspires me, other artists and movie makers inspire me. I love people-watching, which might be kinda creepy, but that inspires me too.

WHAT DO YOU SHOOT WITH? CAMERA BODY AND FAVORITE LENS?

Canon 5d mkIV and Sigma lenses - 20mm, 35mm, and 50mm. My favourite is the 35mm.

WHAT OTHER WAYS DO YOU EXPRESS YOUR CREATIVITY?

I play the violin, viola, and piano, and I sing! I also like to make healthy concoctions, crafty things, and decorate my house.

How do you de-stress at the end of the day?

De-stress? What’s that? haha. Um, in an ideal world I would take a bath with a book. In my current world it looks like watching Netflix for a bit with lots of chips and tea, then falling asleep curled up next to my daughter.

WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU LISTEN TO WHILE EDITING?

Right now? Christmas music. My guilty pleasure is as many Country playlists I can get my hands on. Or some good ol’ Queen or girl power bands to pump me up.

What is your favorite book?

The Witch of Blackbird Pond and The Birth House are my top two!

Name one movie that inspires you.

Life is Beautiful.

How do you handle self-doubt or creative slumps?

I usually end up calling my mom crying and she talks me off the ledge of throwing out the business altogether. I often plan shoots with new parents and get filled up again by the art I create and the connection they have with their new babies. I try to do a lot of positive self-talk or I’ll take self portraits.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST DIFFICULT PART OF YOUR CREATIVE JOURNEY?

I’ll be honest here, it’s not easy to run a business when you’re depressed or anxious. The unknown of finances is pretty scary for me. I have pretty tough anxiety from how stressful last winter was for me financially with some tough clients. So I’m adjusting accordingly this winter and trying to reframe my mind. As for the creative part, a LOT of self-doubt and imposter syndrome creeps in and I second-guess my art a lot! Probably every creative deals with that, and it’s a big one for me.

WHO IS ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE PHOTOGRAPHERS?

Rafal Bojar and Elianna Allon are two of my favourites <3
