Nikki Dunn, Unraveled | An Interview

Nikki sums up her life is three words, “faith, family and photography.” She is a wife and homeschooling mother of 4 children and enjoys capturing the beauty of everyday life. The warmth and movement in her work is entrancing and she has a way of making the ordinary look extraordinary. She plays with shadows throughout much of her work and has a keen eye for composition.

We absolutely believe that Nikki is a photographer to watch and we are beyond thrilled to see what the future holds for her here at Unraveled. Nikki is an Unraveled Expert Artist (UEA) and as soon as we saw her portfolio submission, we KNEW we wanted more from her. So, of course, we asked her to join our team of instructors!

You can NOW learn from Nikki inside the Academy.

Also, if you are interested in becoming a UEA and submitting your portfolio to us, you can do so here.

Here is Nikki, Unraveled…

WHAT INSPIRED YOUR ART?

Family, motherhood and birth are all big inspirations for my art. I have always been a person who feels deeply and this has played a major role in my photography and who I have become as an artist. Every family is unique and I love capturing the connection, love and beautiful sweet moments of each one!

WHAT DO YOU SHOOT WITH? CAMERA BODY AND FAVORITE LENS?

Canon 6D and Canon 24-70mm 2.8 lens

WHAT OTHER WAYS DO YOU EXPRESS YOUR CREATIVITY?

Baking and adventuring/traveling with my husband and our four kids!

HOW DO YOU DE-STRESS AT THE END OF THE DAY?

Chocolate and The Office on repeat!

WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU LISTEN TO WHILE EDITING?

Unraveled: Coffee House on Spotify of course! I'm also really digging Lauren Daigle at the moment!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BOOK?

That's a hard one! My recent favorite is Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert!

NAME ONE MOVIE THAT INSPIRES YOU.

I'm a movie junkie so this is also hard! One of my favorites is Elizabethtown!

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST DIFFICULT PART OF YOUR CREATIVE JOURNEY?

Believing in myself. I'm a perfectionist by nature and tend to be hard on myself when I don't get things exactly how I imagine them. But, I have learned over time that photography (and life itself) is a journey and I will always be growing and learning and evolving as an artist. It's okay to not be the best, as long as I'm becoming a better version of myself, that's all that really matters in the end.

WHO IS ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE PHOTOGRAPHERS?

It's truly hard to pick just one because I admire so many talented photographers out there! But right now I'm totally girl crushing over Liz Sparling from Cherrybird Photography! Her work is always so breathtaking and full of emotion!
